Video Content Management System for Connected TV and Apps
Designed a dashboard for video content providers to launch their connected device applications and distribute their content
I designed the video management dashboard to accommodate the workflows of video content admins to administrate their video-on-demand content. Their pain-points were the tedious workflows and rigid CMS that were available in the market. The goal was to provide an easy to use and tackle the of the admin on a regular basis.
A CMS for video content
Our goal is to build a new CMS to be used by our own developed robust OTT suite - connected devices applications.
Our target customers are small to medium entertainment and media companies who want to expand their audience through connected devices adaptation.
Content providers’ business goals
• To grow their audience by having videos available on different platforms
• Be able to host their own content so that they can fully manage viewers’ usage
Tech dependency
• The end-to-end workflows of the users are dependent on the technical architecture
• There are constraints on how the datas are displayed
Tackling the challenge
To gain alignment with technical designs and sense checking with 1 on 1 workshops. Continuous usability tests make sure users can complete tasks efficiently. Share to the teams with findings, and uncover problems.
Creating new content
One of the tasks that the users need to do is fill in content details when they are creating new content.
Option 1 - Steps by steps sections
Pros: Sections’ titles help users to understand what details are needed for creating a piece of content
Cons: They don’t always have all details for their content at the beginning. There were performance issues with datas from different data sources
Option 2 - Pop up with minimal fields
Pros: Users can easily create a new content in short amount of time.
Cons: The pop up does not give an idea to the users of the amount of details that they needed for the content.
Final version - Forms with logical group fields
• Group fields with titles to help users quickly understand the details needed
• Flexibility to fill in the details only when they are available
• Keep users informed on the amount of details that they need - reduce their stress on any unknown work
Countries selectors on content distribution form
One of the problems we found in user research was the form did not cater for the scenario of selecting all countries and excluding a few countries
User needs - Fill in countries effectively and distribute content to their desired countries in different use cases
Option 1 - Using checkboxes to allow users to select all or a few countries
This gives the users options to select all countries, then select countries that they haven’t got right to distribute yet
Option 2 - Using a dropdown with a tag selector
Users can first use the drop down to select whether they want to select only a few countries, or to select all countries then exclude some.
This gives them flexibility to customise distribution for different pieces of content
Optimising option 1 to help users jump to characters with sticky top bar
The modular backend let our clients to have their own robust suite of connected device applications with CMS integrated.
The backend system is efficient and easy to use, achieving high success rate in rounds of usability testing
